CENTRAL ITALY

The central part of Italy is comprised of the regions of Umbria, Le Marche, Lazio, Abruzzo and Molise.  Being sandwiched between the northern and southern regions of Italy, it is no surprise that the music and dance of the central part of the country have a combination of influences.  These regions are known for their sung poetry, known as ottava rima, which is performed by poeti contadini (peasant poets), and often features heroic themes.  The dances are influenced by the saltarello step, which is more of a jumping dance.  Quadriglias, or square dances, with large groups of couples, tend to be improvisational.
